Esther is sweet, elegant, and with a certain down-to-earth dignity. I associate Esther with the queen who saved the Jewish people from genocide at the hands of the Persians and with the goddess Ishtar. For whatever reason, I also associate this name with the stars. I have only met one Esther. She would be around 25 now. She was slender with short dark hair. At the time that I met her, she was interested in the theater and drama. Esther Victoria
Esther Madeline
Esther Scarlet
Esther Gabrielle
Esther June
Esther Athena

I have just about the same impressions and associations as you, including stars, though I had forgotten about Ishtar. It also makes me think of Esther Williams, the swimmer/actress. In addition to the description you gave, I would say that Esther is quiet and stately.Like you, I thought of Esther June. I also really like your suggestions of Victoria, Athena and Margaret. I'll add Esther Frances.

I think it's so fugly. I just can't like it. It always makes me think of a short, elderly, Midwestern woman with a gravelly voice. This is because it was the real name of Ann Landers. I know I'm the only person in the world who would make the connection, though.

I don't like kit enough to use it or want it for my own name, but it is attractive. In a brisk, no-nonsense, favorite-aunt kind of way.Esther PaigeEsther KathleenEsther Mercedesesther Jillian

Esther Antoinette! I like Esther much better than Hester but not as much as Stella.

I'm Esther Caroline. I've always gone by Caroline. I've tried to warm to Esther very hard. I'm named after my great grandmother who came here to the US to escape pogroms in her town in Poland. She was only 8 and came with just her young sister. I'm proud to be related to her. I should be proud to share her name. But I just can't like Esther. It seems irredeemably ugly to me. Esther. It sounds like a noise you'd make if you were punched in the gut. I guess I should thank my lucky stars I wasn't named after another great grandmother, Ethel. Shudder.
