2017 results: https://www.behindthename.com/bb/baby/4883456As I have done since 2011, I counted up the top 10s from each month to find "BTN's Favorite" (now in quotes @@). 2018 had the second highest participation record ever, with an average of 39 people per month sharing their top 10s. (41 / month in 2015 is the number to beat; tell your friends).I count like the SSA. Accents don't count (Léo and Leo are the same). If you posted combos, only the first name counted. And if you had a tie, I counted the first name ("Luke / Lukas / George, can't decide = point for Luke). Only 10 names per person per gender were counted, so if you tried to sneakily post an 11th or 12th name, it won't be here. And if you mistyped, I counted your error, because I can't read minds.Last year's top names were Alice and Sebastian. This year, we have a new #1 on both sides. For boys, the new #1 is Alexander. Alexander has always been in the top 10, but has never been #1. It also broke a record-- it recieved the most points in a single year for any name ever-- beating Arthur with 90 in 2015.For girls, it was a tight race, but the new #1 is Violet, up from #3 last year.
Here’s the top 20 for girls and top 30 for boys for 2018. To get an idea of how many people put the name on their list each month, divide the number in the parenthesis by 12.

I'm still new to this site, how are these rankings determined?

On the first of every month, we do a top 10 post (Here's the most recent and links to all the past ones: https://www.behindthename.com/bb/baby/4979384) At the end of the year, I count up all the names everyone has posted to determine the board's favorites. It's not perfect since not everyone participates, but I still think it's a pretty good reflection of the board's taste.

Oh! Somehow I've been missing that post, I'll be sure to participate next year.

Maybe it's because I heard the name Alex SO MUCH growing up (on boys and girls), but Alexander, for me, is played out. I might've considered it as a middle name once or twice, but otherwise... I guess I'm alone on BtN in thinking this, though, since it just set a record for votes.I didn't used to like Violet - thought it was one letter away from "violent." Much preferred Viola (still like it). But Violet has grown on me.So glad my girl Josephine is getting love here! She was most popular during WWI, though currently she's just below the Top 100 in the United States. I'd like to see more little Josephines.Other names on the list I really like:Julia
Adelaide
Veronica
Iris
Lydia
Rose
Maude (this was surprising to see!)
Willow
Winifred (can't believe I used to prefer the double-N spelling, it's way too busy)

I'm marveling at how little change there is in the Top 10 for girls. To compare with data from the SSA, boys' names are pretty steady for the most part, with some generational shifts; but popularity shifts far more wildly for girls' names. On BtN, however, popularity had remained, for the most part, stable.Shame about Cecily leaving, though. I've always liked her.

Since the All Time is just all the years added together, I think it makes sense that it doesn't change a whole lot. I think it's actually kind of impressive if a single year can alter the All Time top names a lot.
Since last year was the 10th year, I copied the All-Time list after that year and saved it as 2008-2017, so it's a decade of data-- after another decade, we can compare ;) But it might be interesting to see the changes in 5 or even 3 year chunks. That wouldn't be hard to put together, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in this data anymore.

Thank you for all this, Rachel! A lot of work there.
Many interesting names to think about!
