I kind of like it. Gertrude is an old lady name here, but it is uncommon enough to be interesting and nice again.^^ In Switzerland the nickname would probably be Trudi..

I've warmed up to Gertrude lately. It has a stuffy sort of charm, and I think the nickname Gertie is actually really cute. Trudie could also work in a very retro way. :)

It's completely awful. If I were named Gertrude, I'd call myself Trudy because Gertie is as awful as Gertrude and Trudy isn't, however, I'd be mad at my parents. I don't think it's usable.

i tend to like names that are often seen as clunky and old-ladylike, but Gertrude is one i still haven't warmed up to. it's definitely the "rude" sound for me. "ood" sounds in general are a hard sell, esp in English, lol.i've been meaning to read Gertrude Stein's stuff for the longest though, so that may change my mind. and the Dutch pronuncuation + Finnish form Kerttu are adorable.

I absolutely love the name Gertrude and if it didn't seem to be so universally reviled I would use it in a heartbeat. I like both Gertie and Trudy, but I prefer Gertie. If I ever get a female dog I think she'll be called Gertrude. I taught a little Trudy (just Trudy) a few years ago, and no one seemed to think her name was weird or ugly, so maybe in a few years Gertrude can make a comeback like Hazel did. I remember when I was a kid everyone thought my middle name Olivia was an ugly old lady name.

I agree; yet a person can really breathe magic & life into this one - even due to its very "clunk-i-ness". I love that Gertrude has an arsenal of nick-names - and that s/he should use which ever nick-name works best for her preferene.

Gertrude ist okay and useable, but not really my style. But I Love Trudy. And Rue would also bei a really lovely nn.

It sounds assertive to me. I associate it with green and Saint Gertrude. I'd love to see it used. My favorite NN would be Tru (seems more modern, whimsical) or Trudy (seems more retro, conventional). Gertie's nms, but I don't hate it...I think it's saucy.

I adore it -- it's been in my Top 10 for months. I love its rich history and sonic qualities. My favorite nickname is Trudi / Trudy, but I also like Gertie and Rue. I think it's usable!

Hi A !!!I've heard it only on elderly ladies here. The sound is too rough to my ears (also if I pronounce the G like J as in Italy). Despite that it has an aristocratic and strongly German vibe as it was used by the House of Habsurg.I much prefer just Trudy. So tender and neat.

I like Gertrude, even though it's kind of clunky and ugly. I think it's perfectly usable, but a nickname would probably be used, at this day and age. I might be weird, but I like Tru/True, best. Gertie is second, Trudy third.

Ooh, I suggested Rue as a nickname, but I also like Tru(e)!
