I like Eric. I don’t love it enough to use, but it is nice, easy to pronounce, and not too popular.
The first thing that comes to mind is people I know with this name.
I had a history professor with the first name Eric. He was interesting, passionate, and very helpful to students. I really loved his teaching style. He would incorporate literature from the period that gave students a first person perspective of what people thought during the time.
Another Eric I know is an engineering type with an interest in board games, fantasy novels, and pop culture.

Basic and boring.
The first thing that comes to mind, is Eric Trump, and I'm afraid that's when I lose interest in the name.
I can definitely see where you are coming from with the stormy ocean and wilder side. It is an old Nordic name with many see faring explorer bearers. The Eric’s I know aren’t particularly wild but they all have inquiring minds so perhaps they are a different type of explorer.
It's got a grandpa vibe, and I also think of a ghastly man that a friend of mine at uni was engaged to until she saw the light. And young Mr Trump.
I like Erica though!
