How did they pronounce it?

I think it's beautiful, but there are multiple ways of saying the name which could potentially be confusing!
Marlena needs to go back on my list.

MAHR-leen
Did you hear the "n"? Because if I heard a name that sounded like that on a little kid I'd probably guess it was Marley.
Gosh - I've never heard that one. Only marLEEN or marLAYna.
Same here, and I’ve only ever seen mar-LAY-na in an Asimov book. It’s always mar-LEEN around here, and it’s super dated and “country”, like all the other -leen/-lene names. I would expect a Marlene to be a large, rude, heavily-wrinkled woman in too much makeup and a leopard-print coat, taking huge draws on a cigarette so that the ash gets impossibly long, and then stubbing it anywhere she feels like it. I would NOT find it refreshing on a young girl.
I use to know a girl named Marlene, she was a classmate.
she was small, thin and blonde, funny enough to get you in trouble in class, and a good friend. Re your description, I think she did smoke.
I didn't smoke, too poor!
