Gretchen
What is your impression on the name Gretchen? How would you react if you saw it on a baby girl?

Gretchen is pretty but I prefer Greta.

Gretchen is one of those names I always thought was kind of b#tchy. I kind of like it. It’s not a pretty name — it’s actually unpleasant-sounding — yet it’s still attractive. I’d be surprised and amused to hear it on a baby.

I love it.Everyone says it's ugly, everyone says it's harsh, everyone hates the "retch", but I love it, and I always have. I'm not sure why...maybe its ugliness is part of the reason. It's a favorite of mine, and I would squeal with delight if I saw it on a baby girl.

I really like it, too.

I love the sound too; a name need not end with a vowel to bear beauty - and more - depth. I love Germanic names.

I like a lot of Germanic names, too, especially on girls. :)

I prefer Greta, or Grethe, but I prefer Gretchen to Gretel. I knew a very pleasant Gretchen at school: she was the goalie for the first hockey team, blonde and cheerful but fearless on the field. Baby Gretchens could be a lot of fun.

I can't get past the 'retching' sound of it and I also find 'Gr' an ugly sound. I find it very unattractive and I'd find it an odd choice for a baby in my country.

It looks and sounds unattractive to me. If I encoutnered it in Germany it wouldn't stand out to me, but I'd raise an eyebrow if an English speaker would use it. It has too many similarities with 'wretching' and 'retching' for comfort.

I like it. It just seems like a normal name to me - although it seems a little retro now. Kind of like seeing a baby Bridget or Sonia.

I don’t love it enough to consider using it myself, but I would enjoy meeting a little Gretchen. It has a warm sweetness to it.

Like I said recently, I think Gretchen is cute; in a dirndl-skirt, looped braids, wooden shoes way. I wouldn't ever give it to a human, though I think it would be fun to name a dachshund, for instance, and I wouldn't want it for my own name. But there's a cheerful friendliness to it that I like.
