Anya
What do you think of the name Anya (ON-yuh, not ANN-yuh)? Is it better as a nickname for Anna (I am not Russian in the slightest) or Anastasia (yes, not technically correct, I know)?
Spelling favorite:
Anya
Anja
Aine
Does it sound too much like "on ya"? I've gotten that comment and it did not please me.
Thank you!

I adored the name Anya (or Anja / Aine) for a while. I still like it but I also worried about the "on ya" reference. :-/ I know a little girl named Anja (mn Maria; is of German descent) who mainly shaped my opinion of this name. She's adorable and so sweet, and I first started loving the name because of her (though I do prefer the Anya, or even Aine, spellings). I wouldn't worry too terribly much about the "on ya" thing; I have seen a few Anyas over the years, so it's not as unusual a name as it used to be. As for being a nn, I don't see it as being nickname-y at all. I don't care for Anastasia, and Anna and Anya are so similar sounding that I wouldn't think of using one as a nn for the other. :b

Thanks. Onion...yikes! :)

Yes I prefer On-ya , If I named my duaghter Anastasia I would nickname her Anya, Like you I have got the tiniest bit of russian blood in me but I like way its pronocned, I liekd the roman family. But I fell in love with the nickname when I say the Cartoon film Anastasia.
I love the combo : Anya Clare
Also Anastasia would be prononced: a-na-STAS-ee-a
Are you a familiar?

The vocabulary word "anya" means "mother" in Hungarian, so I associate to that immediately :-)
I like the name on its own, not as a nn for Anna (maybe for a longer name). Spelling preference:
Aine < Anya < Anja < Ania
Budgerigars, ceiling fans, the Times of India are all part of the luggage I brought into the world... Blue Jesus leaked into me; and Mary's desperation, and Joseph's revolutionary wildness, and the flightiness of Alice Pereira... all these made me, too.
(Midnight's Children)

Good, thanks!
Anya doesn't sound too terribly like "on ya"--I wouldn't worry on that. It's a really lovely name, and I like it much better either as a nickname for Anastasia or on its own. (I think it stands alone very well, honestly; it doesn't need a "full" name.)
I like Anya best, and after that, Aine. Anja looks silly to me.

Thanks! I'm glad you feel that way about "on ya".
I figured you would not be in favor of Anna. :)
