I love Hartley, I've had it on my list forever! The first time I heard it was when I met my husband, he had a father-like figure named Hartley. Almost used it as a middle name but only had one son and more than two middle name would be too many ;)

I associate it with a boy from my middle school who bore it. He had white blond hair, blue eyes, and a rather elfin face. I think of it as rather spritely and appealing. Maybe Peter Pan, never growing up, material. Not in an infantile sort of way though.

It's growing on me. I'm a huge fan of surname names anyway but this is a new one that keeps popping up. The more I see it, the more I'm liking it. It reminds me of Bellamy a little.

The some-random-surname trend is getting old. It will definitely sound dated.

Definitely. I saw this name on a baby in facebook and some mom responded to the post on Hartley noting her son Huxley.

I meant to say "another mom responded."

I've been reading a book where the love interest is named Mary Hartley, but goes by her surname Hartley to distinguish herself from all the other Mary's.It's a surname, and one that may be misheard as the more common Harley. Unless I had ties to the surname, I wouldn't use it.

Iris Murdoch by any chance? Very weird book, but I enjoyed it anyway.
