For me it's inseparable from the famous wealthy family name, so it sounds pretentious to me. Would never use.
It seems masculine to me, but if it's as pretentious as it sounds, it could be a girl name too - since the dropping of important surnames as first names, is done with girls as well as boys. On a girl, to me it seems very stuck up. On a boy, I can sort of pretend it might possibly be just a first name - like, his parents never heard of the name Astor except when they saw it in a name dictionary.
If I pretend it's just an ordinary guy name, it's alright. Nifty meaning. But the "Ass" sound keeps me from really loving it. Same as with Aster.
