Tierney
I just discovered that Patrick Troughton (the second Doctor Who) has a granddaughter called Tierney. Her sister is called Florence.

It makes me think of Gene Tierney who, while she was a beautiful movie star, also struggled with mental illness, so it's not a wholly positive association. But I'm sure that's just me. Otherwise, I think it's pretty, and much better than Florence.

When I first came across this name I thought it was pronounced with three syllables; tee-ehr-nee and I liked it so much I added it to my PNL. Then I heard it said out loud (when I was an exchange student in Ireland, the univeristy had a buidling called the Tierney building) and realised I had been wrong about the pronunciation. I stopped liking it then.
I see Tierney as a masculine name and have a hard time seeing it as unisex or feminine. Florence and Tierney are so very different I would never have guessed they were sisters.

I'm surprised I'm saying this, but it's not bad. It doesn't go with Florence at all though, that bothers me...

I want to like this name because it is similar to Tiffany and Trinity (two names I like), but all I can think of is “tyranny”.

I do know a woman named Tierney but I'd prefer it as a male name, and imo Tiernan is a better alternative as it avoids the "tyranny" association. Regardless, I don't think it fits with Florence at all.

nah...reminds me too much of the word "tyranny". (assuming it's prn. TEER-nee)

I knew a female Tierney at University. I don’t think it goes very well with Florence.

With Florence and Tierney in a set, I'd assume Tierney were a boy, honestly.

It's interesting. The first time I heard of a person named Tierney I thought it was "tyranny" and was a bit confused :P

Hi !!!Tierney is too strange in my opinion.
It seems a surname and I can't see it on a girl anyway.
Its sound is not appealing at all. After that its meaning is "lord" and it was originally masculine, so I prefer a different form of it that is Tiarnach for a boy. A name with a similar sound that I prefer for a girl is Tansy. It would be better as a sibling for Florence.

They don't sound like sisters at all to me. Florence is okay but I like it better as a middle name. Tierney is unattractive and nasal to me, and sounds a lot like tyranny.
