Swayze
Swayze is not uncommon in Mississippi for either sex. The baseball field at Ole Miss is called Swayze Field after Tom Swayze (star player in college and later a long time coach of the team) and from my research, the Swayze family were some of the earliest settlers in the Natchez area. Natchez is one of the best preserved towns from before the civil war and had many grand plantations and there is still a lot of 'old money' there. Patrick Swayze was also a descendent of that family. There is a well known attorney in my town with the surname Swayze and it's not uncommon to hear it as a surname. More often than not though, I see it as a first name. I think I've had one Swayze in at least one of my classes each semester (all female). One of the kids that I babysit is best friends with a male Swayze who is about 11. I did a bit of research on this when I started seeing or hearing it around so much. I think the first time I ever saw a BA for a Swayze, before I lived here, I thought it was in honor of Patrick Swayze or something but I think even that was a Mississippi BA. Maybe quads where one of the girls was called Swayze?Anyway, I don't know where your BA is from but I thought I'd share that :)

Interesting! I have definitely seen Swayze a handful of times and had no idea it had a lot of history is Mississippi.

There is a YouTuber called Unnatural Vegan who’s first name is Swayze. That’s the only time I’ve heard of it used as a first name.

Mississippi is such a bizarre little naming microcosm. I had always assumed Swayze was after Patrick Swayze before now.

It seriously is. I'm regularly baffled! But now I'm kind of used to Swayze being a given name *shrug*But I thought it was 100% because some parents were too obsessed with Patrick Swayze but I don't think that's it in the majority of cases at all. I'd guess that the majority of people given the first name Swayze would be in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.

Swayze has appeared in the data in these states:Ohio - only in 2013, 5 births
Pennsylvania - only in 2017, 5 births
California - only in 2014, 5 births
Georgia - only in 2012, 5 births
Texas - 2012 (6), 2013 (5), 2014 (6). Also Swayzie in 2017, 7 births
Mississippi - 2005 (5), 2010 (7), 2012 (7), 2013 (11), 2014 (5), 2015 (10), 2016 (12), 2017 (13).Utah prefers Swayzie (2012, 6; 2016, 7). Swayze and Swayzee had 5 births each in 2017.
So you're right about Mississippi. (It is also the only state where it appeared prior to Patrick Swayze's death). If it's used in Louisiana and Alabama, it's less than 5-- but the national data says there were 66 born in 2017 so I'm counting 43 unaccounted for.

I mainly suggested LA and AL because of closeness in geography and especially because Natchez is close to LA. I didn't look up the stats so I took a guess. I'm glad the stats reflected my hypotheses on Swayze in MS though :) Thanks!I have definitely had more Swayzes than that in my classes born prior to 2005 but it's entirely possible they were Mary Swayze or Anna Swayze or something and went by their middle name that appeared on my roll. Name stats are hard here because so many go by their middle names.
