Winifred
Thoughts on Winifred?Do you like any nicknames for It?Combos?DH and I both like it, which since we couldn't agree on a girl's name at all with either of our kids, who obligingly were boys.~Anna~

It's a family name for me and I've thought about using it as a middle name but I find it way too awkward as a first name. I'm not opposed to it personally but I'd feel self-conscious telling someone that was my kid's name because it is commonly held up as the prime example of an "ugly" name with Gertrude and the like. I'm all for strong female names but Winifred kind of sounds bumbling to me rather than strong sometimes? Almost cartoonish?I like Win and Winnie and many other nicknames. I just know I wouldn't like to introduce myself as Winifred myself, not even a little bit. I can't picture it on a young adult woman trying to find her way in the world at all. I just can't.

I love it. One of E's grandmothers was Winifred so it's on our list although I suspect E will argue for something shorter with our surname. I like Winn and Winnie as nicknames.
vote up1
It's lovely in the alliteration with your surname and the nicknames are nice and short.
vote up1
True - I'm not sure if I can get E to agree to alliteration but it's worth a shot!Or if I can get it in to the middle, Ivy Winifred could be a winner.

I only like Winifred in theory. I wouldn't want to be named Winifred! The -fred part really makes it a not so attractive name for me and it has a bit of a nerdy vibe.
Nicknames: Winnie, Win, Freddie or maybe Freda or Freya, maybe even Free.
Combos: Winifred Rosalie
Winifred Millicent
Winifred GenevieveEleanor Winifred
Mathilda Winifred
Philomena Winifred

Oooh. DH loves Freya and I have always nixed it. Using it as a nickname for Winifred could be a nice plus for him.Mathilda Winifred is jazzy. I like it.

I kind of like it. I can see the appeal. The only nickname I really like for it is Win. Maybe Freda. (I'll come back and make some combos if I think of it)The first time I heard this name was in the Winnie the Pooh show I think? There was a letter signed "Winifred" and there were lines like "What's a Winnie Fred?" "Winifred is.... a GIRL" because apparently the Winnie the Pooh characters had never met a girl before despite Kanga existing. lol

Not that particular moment, but the Pooh connection is definitely a good thing for us.Thanks!

I like Winifred. Mostly because I love the meaning. Also, I like a lot of feminine names that end in D, and my grandpa's name was Fred.NNs:
I'd maybe use Fred or Ned, but I don't think it needs a NN. Wendy and Windy are kind of cute, but I hate Winnie.
These were my favorite combos last time I thought of it:
Niobe Winifred
Winifred Acacia
Niobe Winifred Acacia
Winifred Lavender

Ooh, I best not tell DH the meaning. He likes martial things.Niobe isn't my style, but it is really lovely with Winifred.Thank you!

It's kind of cute but also kind of dorky. Winnie could definitely make a comeback even though it's not my cup of tea. I think especially in England where nickname names are common. Winifred, I'm not sure about that...the 'fred' part might put some people off. It's cute but I wouldn't like to be named Winifred myself. I would like to see it on someone else. Winifred Josephine
Winifred Noelle
Winifred Joyce
Winifred Elise
Winifred Maya
Winifred Susannah
Winifred Emilia
Winifred Rosalia
Winifred Amandine

Winifred Susannah is really lovely, it sounds very summery to me. doesn't break the dork mold so much as the other combos, but that makes me like it more.

Thank you!We both consider Fred an up side, haha.I like Winifred Maya. It's unexpected and peppy.

QuoteWinifred, I'm not sure about that...the 'fred' part might put some people off.
It's coming back in the US. In 2006 there were only 27 born, and in 2016 there were 159. On the chart by 2020, maybe.

That is interesting! :) I could see more people using it. I just don't really think it will become very common (as in making the top 100) but maybe I am wrong. I would like to see it used more, it's definitely nicer to me than some top 10 names.

I just said I didn't really like Posy in the other thread, but Winifred Posy is just adorable. I'm like Winifred Posy Marguerite as a really subtle dorky namenerd nod to my grandmother Dasie (My great grandmother didn't know how to spell Daisy).Winifred Clarice and Winifred Autumn are also lovely.Thank you!

I adore it.It's back up to the top of our list if we have another girl.I always liked Fred/die as a nickname, but after changing my mind on loving Theo, i'd be hesitant to do that again. I also don't mind Winnie too.
The only issue I had is that our nephews name is Winston, so I thought it might be too close, but we rarely see them so meh.
vote up1
I am surprised I like Fred, but I really do. DH does too. Who knows what we'd call a LO though. John is Bug and Hector is Noodle as much as they get their actual names.I think you can use Winifred as a cousin to Winston. As long as they aren't both Win all the time.

Theodora was turtle all through my pregnancy, but now she doesn't get it anymore. She does get called cranky quite regularly, but I don't know if that counts.Weird thing is that hubby hates Frederick, but doesn't mind Fred/die as a nickname for Winifred.

I like it but don't really care much for the nicknames, so it's middle name only for me. I assume a nickname is unavoidable but I could be wrong.
Winifred Alice
Winifred Briar
Winifred Colette
Winifred Doreen
Winifred Hazel
Winifred Ida
Winifred Lenora
Winifred Lois
Winifred Maple
Winifred Margot

Ha, I see you are going down the alphabet!
Winifred Opal is nice, though I tend to say Opul, rather than the right pronounciation.

I really like Winifred Ida and Winifred Sylvie.
