A few years ago, a co-worker of mine named her daughter Eliana. I was thinking that it may have been a spelling variation, so I just went to look at her Facebook page to check. It is Eliana, no spelling variation, and I saw that apparently they mostly call her Ellie.
Actually, I find the name annoying. It's a jumble of vowels that appeal to those who want a pwetty-pwetty name, in my opinion. It seems to have no substance. Ellie has never appealed to me either, but if it's going to be used, I'd rather see it as a nickname for Eleanor.
