What do you think of the name Anastasia? Which pronunciation do you use?

With my accent, I usually pronounce it as an-ə-STAY-zhə. And I often go back and forth from loving the name, to thinking it's over-the-top. For that reason, I think I'd be far more likely to use it for a character than a real life person.

I've always liked the name Anastasia, since I read Lois Lowry's books about Anastasia Krupnik when I was a child. I even wrote my own books about a girl called Anastasia.
Sadly, someone spoiled the name a little for me by saying it sounds like "metastasis"...
I pronounce it a-na-STAH-see-a.

I love the name and pronounce it the same way as the film did, I don't think about its syllables (I try to but it changes the way I say it) I just say it. I wouldn't use it as a first name as I think it'll be a bit to much for her (due to the grand duchess) but think its perfect for a middle name.

nms just because it's a little bit of a mouthful with too many similar sounds- esp when said with five syllables, since the zh sound helps break it up a bit.. it is a very nice name though and i'd suggest it to others, just wouldn't use it myself.

also i feel like it'd be shortened to Ana in English speaking countries without second thought.

I pronounce it both AN-ah-STAY-zha and AH-nah-STAH-see-yah depending on where the person with the name is from.
I adore it either way.

I do wish they hadn't used it for one of the sisters of Cinderella in the last Disney adaptation because now I can hear Cate Blanchett's stepmother voice calling the name, but otherwise, I think it has good namesakes. I would assume Romanova is the most famous one and that's not too bad despite the tragedy.

Love this name. For some reason, it seems a tad much in an Anglophone country; but it’s a great name.

That's what I mean. All the replies before you are saying they prefer the Russian pronunciation (ahn-ə-STAHS-ee-yə), which is pretty; but how feasible is it if you live outside of a Slavic (or Greek, for that matter) community?

I love it. I probably wouldn't use it as a first name. Not because I think it's OTT but because it's not exactly my style (for first names anyway). I prefer the five syllable pronunciation.

I love it, it's one of my favorites. I dislike the pronunciation you are using to be honest, sorry! ;) Just not my cup of tea. I like the Russian pronunciation best. In any case I only like it pronounced with 5 syllables, not with just 4. I will probably use it as a middle name.

I pronounce it the Russian / Ukrainian way (ah-nah-STA-see-ya) unless told otherwise.
