Robert - a strong name

They are both way too boring for me.

John is kind of boring, but with it you can't go wrong. Robert is nice.

You can't go wrong with either one. I like them both, a lot, but Robert is the one I'd choose.

They're fine. Good, serviceable names. No more, no less.

I like John, and I dislike Robert because of the "bert" syllable, although I do like the nickname Rob. There's no getting around the fact that both are boring in the extreme.

Both are family names, for me and probably for millions of others.

I would use John without hesitation, probably as a mn, and Robert or probably Robin (also a family name) as a fn. I love names with long histories.

My maternal grandfather was named John and my paternal grandfather is named Robert but goes by Bob. Growing up I was always closer to my grandpa John but I love both of my grandpas.

John is really bland, I have a million John's in my family and I know so many others. Truthfully as much as I loved my grandfather, love my uncle and my two cousins - one on each side of my family - I find John so boring that I personally can't even see using it as a middle name. I also used to have another uncle John but he divorced my aunt and he never behaved as if he cared about me, but he is an amazing artist. Also my great grandfather and my grandpa John's nephew John, so many John's there are even more but I will stop there. I'd prefer to use one of the many different forms of the name like Ian, Evan, Sean, or Shane, etc... John is still way too popular although it is finally less than .5% of boys born in the US which is the first time since we've started taking census data.

I only have one Robert in my family who as I said is my grandfather. I actually am very open to the idea of using Robert as a middle name for a future son one day. I think that it feels very intelligent and noble. I always imagine evergreen colored leather chairs, dark warm wood trim, and fireplaces. I'm not certain why since my grandfather's favorite design style was mid century modern, maybe because Robert feels like a very masculine name but not macho, more sauve and debonaire. Possibly because of Robert Redford, I'm not certain. I am not a fan of the nn Bob because it is too old fashioned, I prefer Rob but I don't love it. Not caring much for the nn's is part of why I prefer Robert as a mn but it also seems very handsome in the middle and it flows well with many names. It is still fairly common but it has been at less than .5% since 2005 so I think it is useable as a fn I just personally prefer it as a mn.

John to me is still incredibly boring. So much so its the name for a John Doe. Its an everyman name, and not in a good way. I mean, it isn't a horrible name. It has history and it isn't uber strange but its just so dang boring.

I like Robert, but I also have a family member I would like to honor by using the name so I think my opinion of the name is colored by the fact that I really like and respect that person. I am not sure I would like it as much if I didn't, especially because I really dislike the nn Bob and am on the fence about Rob. I prefer Bert, Hobbes, or Robin as nns.
