Re: Welsh names in top 100
in reply to a message by Mireio
Of the ones trending now, I like:
Seren
Alys (though I feel like this would be seen as "kre8yve" outside of Wales)
Eira
Cerys
&
Osian
Rhys
Ellis (but the English pronunciation - those Welsh double-Ls trip me up)
Gethin
Even though it's considered an "old lady" name here in the States, I can't help but have a soft spot for Gladys. It's such a happy name (look, it says "glad" right there)! Maybe because it's a family name.
I really love Welsh names, but I feel like a lot of the ones I love might be seen as dated in Wales:
Angharad
Arianrhod
Blodwen
Bronwen
Catrin
Ceridwen
Eirwen
Eluned
Glenys
Gwendoline
Gwenith
Gwenllian (except I'd pronounce it GWEN-lee-an, so maybe Gwenlian would be a better spelling?)
Gwyneira
Nerys
Rhiannon
Rhonwen
Tesni
Winifred
&
Andreas (though this isn't specifically Welsh)
Celyn
Glendower
Idris
Owen
Roderick
Steffan (my favorite Stephen variant)
Taliesin
Vaughn
I used to really like Briallen, but I was pronouncing it bree-uh-LEN (because, again, those Welsh double-Ls...); I had assumed the Welsh pronunciation was bree-AH-hlen, with that L in the back of the throat. However, the pronunciation key now says bree-AHSH-en, and I am now completely lost.
