I love it, but prefer Anna. I don't really know if it can stand alone.
I think it can stand alone fine. The only one I knew of is an adult, and I can imagine it on a woman of any age. I quite like it, but not enough to use it as a full name right now. I'd consider it as a nn for other names I love more.
Only as a nickname, imo, not as a standalone. There are so many lovely An- names to choose from. It wouldn't be hard to find one that Annie could be a nickname for.
I think it can stand alone, since as you say, it has stood alone very well for over a hundred years at least.
But I don't actually like Annie. It just calls to mind some barefoot, dirty-faced hillbilly child with her braids flying apart and her raggedy dress and a lard sandwich in her school lunch pail.
