If I wanted a Tess, there's no way I'd use Esther. Tess is not the least intuitive as a nickname for Esther. You might say the same for a few other nicknames, such as Peggy for Margaret and Patsy for Martha, but they at least do have a history as nicknames for those names. The only way I would do this is if Esther were honoring, and I hated it, (which I actually do), and was determined to find a nickname for every day use rather than the name I hated. My stepmother actually did that when she decided to call her son Harry III Hutch .
