I slightly prefer Laura but have always considered these two names (along with Maria) to be timeless in the sense that if a person had never met others with these names (and even sometimes if they had), they'd have very little idea how old they were just by hearing the names. I love it -- no assumptions, no judgments.
As for the similar qualities of the names themselves, they're both classic, elegant, and internationally known. They'd fit in almost any culture.
