Madonna's twins
Madonna just adopted 3-year-old twin girls from Malawi, and I found their names particularly interesting — Esther and Stella (no idea if those are her birth names, or if they were renamed by Madonna).I thought it was an interesting set for twins, since they are basically "twin" names: both mean "star", and Stella was used by Jonathan Swift as a "Latinate" form of Esther. (Another random observation: that Madonna's daughters all have names connected to the Virgin Mary's appellations: Lourdes, Mercy, and now after "Stella Maris" - I don't know if it's intentional or not to name all the women after "that" Madonna!)What do you think of the names? Do they fit well or are they too matchy for twins?
Personally, I think they are different enough to be considered separate names (like Eve and Zoe) rather than versions of the same name (like Elizabeth and Isabella). Also, can you think of other names for twins (or multiples!) that have equivalent meanings in different languages?

Their names are actually…Estere and Stelle according to Madonna.
And I believe that both David and Mercy kept their birth names, so I assume this is also the case for the twins.

Estere sounds like a pseudo-Italian form of Esther. (I think the actual Italian form of Esther is Ester.)

Ooh, I love Stella Maris! That's a great combo. :)I like Esther and Stella. Twins-y without being barf-y twins-y. I approve.Actually, the only name she chose that I didn't like was Rocco. The others are great.

Wow Madonna's still adopting?I like Esther and Stella, though not together. And isn't Esther Madonna's Kabbalah name?

To be honest I prefer names with meanings that complement each other. I really care about the meanings of names so I would think of them too while calling my kids and it would just be kind of bland to have two names with exactly the same meaning. Esther and Stella are both nice but I would prefer something like Luna and Eliana (moon and sun), Eliana and Estella (sun and star), Aurora and Layla (dawn and night), Lily and Violet (two different flowers) etc.

Anne and Grace would work; most people wouldn't see the link. Also Deborah and Melissa. And Philippa and Epona, if anyone would use Epona IRL!

I'm sure some die hard Legend of Zelda fans would use Epona!

If they went to my child care centre, I would get confused and call both of them "Estella" all the time. Besides that, I don't care for either name.

Im not crazy about Esther but they are nice together. I like the similar meanings too for twins, I don't like matchy matchy names but I think its nice they are tied together that way. I'm wondering if those were actually their birth names though.

I think they are pretty nice, both separately and together. (I think those are their birth names.) They do mean the same thing, but sound nothing alike.

Hi !!!I love it!
Both Esther and Stella are among my favourite names!I think that is beautiful.
I dislike names that are too similar -Ava and Eva or Isabella and Elizabeth-...But names with the same theme are wonderful!Byeeeeeee
