Re: Reuben
in reply to a message by Eilis
It is kind of annoying when a first name is used to name an object and then it's shied away from for that reason. Like Mercedes -- you always hear, "It's a car." And then when you point out that it was a name before it was a car, and in fact the car was named after a person who had the name Mercedes, you hear, "Well yes I know that but what difference does that make? Now the car is well-known so that's what people think of."However, I don't think the car has rendered Mercedes unusable because I have known two young women named Mercedes. My reason for disliking the name Reuben have nothing to do with the sandwich, and if I liked the name I wouldn't allow the existence of the sandwich to deter me.
