In a vacuum, Ian, because I prefer the name.
If I was naming a son, who presumably has my partner as a parent and his surname I'd use Ethan. Partially because Ian doesn't sound as good with my partners surname, and partially because my dad calls my father-in-law "Ian", it's sort of an inside joke.
