People always seem to be asking this question! My feeling is that a nickname is something organic that develops as the child grows and often has nothing to do with the actual name...
As for short names - why does every name have to be shortened? Ok, if you're going to call a child Marhershalalhashbaz then yes. Or if you choose a name with several obvious shortenings and you don't like one of them then I guess you'd want to be prepared but otherwise...why?
Now I've got that off my chest, I know an incredibly glamorous Ingrid (now in her 60s) who goes by Ingy to her friends and family
