It means "hay clearing", and I do believe Hayley is the original spelling. :-)

But idk about my fave spelling...I've gone back and forth between Hailey, Hayley, Haley, Haylie, and Hailie. Right now, it's Hailie, though, and I've used that spelling on a character.
