Shanikca
All right. Parents with questionable name tastes have struck again, with a student I helped today. You're probably thinking "Shanicka" isn't that terrible, right? Well, no, go back and read the thread title.
Shanikca.
That is not a typo. The K comes before the C in this person's name.
... Why???????????????

Ugh, ugh, ugh.
I've seen Tomakco and Tomekco on twins. Terrible even if spelled correctly.

Personal preference, I suppose. I've seen names with vowels that don't make sense at all. They don't change the pronunciation. Carliea comes to mind. Why not Carlia? Or Kelsiie. Why not Kelsey?
I'm sure Shanikca will get plenty of experience spelling out her name. OTOH, I've seen much, much worse.

That spelling makes me feel a bit cross-eyed. :) I once met a Phoenix spelled Pheonix that made me feel similar.
Pheonix! UGH, it hurts to type! lol
That's rough. lol. I've seen a few things like that, spellings that are super counterintuitive like "hp" making the f sound, where I just get really "???" I can't think of any examples off the top of my head though.
I don't want to bring this up again, but...was the kid black, or white?
Not sure - I spoke to her on the phone.
I only communicate via phone with the students. My best guess, going by her voice, would be black, but I could be wrong. She might even be Hispanic, I don't know. I'm just thrown by the fact that the K comes before the C, I've never seen that before and don't know why her parents would do that.
I'd still rather be Shanikca than Madly, though, so that's something.

Hmmm...in that case, I'll plead the 5th.
It doesn't bother me.
And it bothers me that you're negatively speaking about a name of a student.

Because we shouldn't speak negatively about a name if we know someone who has the name?
It bothers me a LOT when teachers come on and critique their students' names. Bex even got in trouble with a parent once.
I'm not a teacher.
When I say this was a student, I don't mean my student, personally. I work in the Admissions department for a school, we get calls all the time.

Really? That seems like a very immature parent.
I did not get in trouble with the parent. The parent was annoyed about people's comments on the name and asked me to remove it, i did. I am still in touch with that parent, people say much worse stuff about the kids name to his face.
** also adding, that most of the local schools newsletters are public on the internet for anyone to view/critique.

Yeah, that's weird.
People share all sorts of names here from family members, to students, to friends kids... it's pretty natural to have some sort of reaction to names, whether positive or negative.

This is coming from the person who got in trouble with sharing a student's name.
And also - I'd be REALLY angry if a mom shared a picture of my child on an internet message board without my permission. Theodora in it or not you should not have shared that picture of your baby group.

Well I have permission from all the other mums, so yeah it's fine. Most of them belong to online forums and we all spoke about sharing the picture online. So yeah, don't assume things, it makes you look silly.
As for that thing years and years ago, I did not get in trouble for sharing the name. The parent asked to take the post down because of peoples reactions to it. I did, it was fine.

OMG and I thought KVIIIlyn was bad!!!
No, that's still worse! lol
I've seen some doozies (work for a school), but I don't think KVIIIlyn will ever be topped. Ever. I remember it taking me a good minute to figure out what that even was, lol.
Still not convinced KVIIIlyn isn't an urban legend.
