I went to school with a girl named Genessis. She was Hispanic, and she definitely rocked the name and it didn't seem strange on her at all. So yeah, I think that it works, but you really have to be the type of person to be able to pull it off.

I don't like it. I put it squarely in the same category as Neveah, Diamond, and Chastity.

I like it! You could use Genny for a nn, too!

I also wonder if you like Genevieve or Geneva, then Genesis could be her nickname at home?Names like Genesis you might like:Schuyler

Charity
Verity
Jessamine / Jessamyn

I like it as a word but I don't like that it'd be shortened to Genny or Sissy.

I like it, but for a mn. I also like it as a mn for a boy.

I know (of?) a Genesis (pronounced "Henesee"), and to me this is beautiful, distinct, and unique. If you like the name I hope you use it - in whatever pronunciation, spelling, or form you like.

Genesis pronounced like the alcohol Hennessy? No. Just no.

It's not my style, but I've met a couple girls/women named Genesis and it didn't bother me. I'm indifferent to it I suppose.

I have always loved the sound of it. I would not use it because I feel like very spiritual or religious word names are personal, so I prefer it in the middle.

I am of two minds about it, on the one hand I think the sound is attractive and I don't think it's any less usable than any other Biblical puedo-name (Eden, Shiloh, Carmel) On the other hand it seems much more religious than a name from the bible might. I am an Atheist, so it would seem weird to me to use the name of a book that goes against my beliefs (like Evolution).

Exactly! That's my problem. I only like how it sounds but it is very biblical and I'm afraid of sparking conversations about religion or how religion is stupid and I shouldn't have named my kid that. I'm not religious and someone on here said it would be weird to have a name like that without any religious background. But it sounds pretty.

I named a character Genesis once when I was a kid drawing picture books :P I like it in theory but I think it's too biblical and wordy for real life. I'd use it for a horse though. It doesn't have enough good nicknames to use for a human IMO. Gene? Genny? Jenny? Gen? Jen? Sis? meh.

The Gen- part makes it namey but I dislike the sis sound at the end. I also think of it as a word, simply meaning the original generation of a thing - and I'm not religious so my brain goes, "genesis of what?" The Bible book doesn't seem like a "namey" meaning to me. So, not into it. But it's not terrible and I'd be reasonably comfy calling someone Genesis if it was their name.I have never seen it IRL and I'm under the impression it is mainly a Hispanic usage, maybe religious but mostly just popular. I think it'd be odd for someone to be named Genesis without any religious meaning being intended. I just don't understand what the meaning would be.I feel like it's in the same vein as Nevaeh (modern, quasi-religious but not traditional-seeming) only less English-languagey/more international, and as it's more abstract and Bible-y it seems to be less of a popular-style ("trashy") name. (While "trashy" has a unique meaning that shouldn't be offensive, that word might sound offensive and I don't mean to put people down who use such names).

I think its has become popular amongst african and hispanic Americans. I have never met a caucasian or asian girl/boy named Genesis.

Makes me think of Sega more than anything else, so unless they are related to a Sonic or a Mega Drive then it doesn't really seem to fit!

Ah!Sega and Genesis would be fantastic pet names!

You can add Saturn and Dreamcast to the list! Knights might be good as well!

Really unattractive on either gender.

Works. Not really my style, but it definitely works. I know a toddler named Genesis and everyone is always saying how great her name is. Though, to be fair, her family is Bible-themed in names. Dad is Ezekiel (Zeke) and brother is Malachi. They use the full Genesis all the time too. I honestly like Genny enough that I think it would make a bright nickname for an uncommon first.

1. In my area, Genesis is the name of a small chain of nursing homes.
2. "Invisible Touch," "Land of Confusion" and "Sussudio."So no, I have never liked it for a name.
