How do you pronounce Damaris?
I always thought that Damaris was pronounced "da-mare-iss" but the site says it's "dam-uh-ris". I only like it pronounced the first way. Is that usable?
Replies
I've always pronounced it the same as you.
I say Duh-MAR-iss (rhyming with car). That's the only way I like it, but your way could probably work if you reinforce it.
"DAM-uh-ris," like the site. Lovely. :0)
I live in the U.S., by the way. It may be a regional thing. I can see people in the UK using "DAM-uh-ris" but people here in the U.S. using "duh-MARE-is" more. That's just a guess of course.

I've only ever heard DAM uh riss. My mum works with one who is in her fifties.
I pronounce it da-MAH-ris. Usable, hmm...I'm not sure. As a mn, sure, but otherwise I find it a bit too special.
I've only known one Damaris;she's a French-speaker, and pronounces the name as it's shown on the BTN look-up function.
I wouldn't give a child a name, and not give it it's right pronounciation. It would be a source of tiresomness for the parent for a while, and then the child/then adult for all her life.

Interesting. I've always read it da-MAR-iss, so neither of the ways you mention! I've never heard it said though, that I can recall. I think da-MARE-iss makes more sense than the way BtN describes it, but I also wouldn't condone the use of a name that's intentionally pronounced wrong. But again, I'm not sure how "wrong" it is!

Hmm, a Tamara situation. I guess I would say da-MARE-is upon first seeing it so I don't think it's ridiculous for you to want to use it that way.
(I have no preference among either pronunciation... I think it's a pretty ugly name either way, sorry.)

Hi !!!
I pronounce it... Dah-MAH-rees ...

'Usable' isn't the same as 'a good idea'. I know a Damaris who is always and only DAMuhris, and I've never heard it any other way. Some names do accommodate two pronunciations - So-FIE-a and So-FEE-a, for instance, but not Damaris.
However, in a world where otherwise sensible people take Xavier and pronounce it Ex-Ayv-i-er, as though an avier was something currently outdated, why not? Pronounce it any way you like; just be prepared to do a lot of explaining.

That's how I pronounce Xavier, lol
In Australia and New Zealand too, sometimes.
I've only ever heard Dam uh ris, and much prefer it.
I say dah-MAH-ris.
I suppose the way you pronounce would be how most English people say it. So it's usable. But it's definitely not my favourite pronunciation.

I'd say duh-MAH-ris. duh-MARE-is would not occur to me but I guess it's usable.
I had never heard of it and pronounced it the same way you do.
I say it dah-MARE-iss but I also have a friend who pronounces it DAM-uh-riss. I hate the second way so much.
Da-mare-iss
My instinct is to say "da-MARE-is". I have to remind myself it's "DAM-uh-ris." I love it anyway. And who says you can't pronounce it "da-MARE-is" if you want to? Well, someone can say it, but they can't enforce it.
I once met a Damaris who pronounced it DAM-uh-riss.
Before I met her, I thought it was duh-MARE-is, but I was mistaken.

Duh-MARE-iss. But I prefer the spelling Demarys.

DAM-uh-ris.
I've heard the duh-MAIR-is pronunciation. There's a food network personality who pronounces it that way. I don't like it at all, but I think it's a common enough variant to be usable.

I've never heard of DAM-e-rus. I've always heard it pronounced da-MARE-is.
Duh-mar-is.
