Zechariah / Zachariah
I was discussing names with my fiance again. To recap, his favorite is Adam (because it is nondescript and can be found in all three Abrahamic religions). The only other name he likes is Azrael (not bland or boring in the least, but instead has "cool factor"). I thought Nathaniel was one we both liked well enough, but further discussion reveals that we both dislike Nathan. We'd push for Nate / Nat, but he would hate it if the hypothetical kid ended up going by Nathan, whereas I would be able to deal.So I was trying to come up with names that were not so boring (his girl choice is Sarah and mine is Cordelia) and have cool factor. He thinks my names will get boys picked on.I mentioned Zachariah / Zechariah. He was actually okay with those. I'm not huge on Zach though. It feels dated. Riah is too feminine for him. Ziah sounds like a short form for Messiah to both of us, but I think I could be okay with it. Him...not so much. If you want to skip the recap and background info, start here.Do you think Zeke for Zechariah is too much of a stretch?
Do you have any other ideas for nicknames?
What do you think of the names Zachariah and Zechariah?
What kind of people would you picture using one of those names?
Could either work with Cordelia?
Any suggestions for other names that might work for both of us?-----------------------------------------
Current favorites:
Ephraim / Tristram / Benedict / Hamish
Cordelia / Winifred / Edith / MargaretVote on my PNL: http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/114016

"Cool" name test: Go together to a local park on a Saturday morning and watch the parents and toddlers at the playscape, and picture yourselves as one of them, calling your own little diapered kid Azrael. Picture yourself calling a bank or a landlord and spelling your name, Azrael, for the person answering. If you still think it's cool, then I guess that's a go.Nate by itself is OK IMO, and if you called him that from birth and always signed him up for things as Nate unless you really had to put official Nathan, Nate would definitely stick.I agree with Bear about Zech / blech (and dreck and heck and fleck. It's a sound I spit out). Zachariah is better. I prefer Zachary nn Zack. Zack has cool factor for me, Zach does not. Zeke is too much of a stretch IMO and doesn't sound cool to me.
Zechariah could be Ry. Or Caz, but that's maybe as much a stretch as Zeke.
I agree with Llewella about the kind of people who'd use Zechariah / Zachariah.
They work OK with Cordelia.
Zara and Zechariah comes to mind

Azrael is okay, just not for me. He's the one who likes it, and when I guessed why, he agreed, so that's what I'm basing the "cool" thing on. Plus, it's from his background, which is not Christian. It reminds me of a comic book character--Azazel, Nightcrawler's father. Azrael is the angel of death though, and so that just plain makes it a no go for me, even if the name were to be my style. I still think Nathaniel nn Nate could work. I'll just have to keep it on the back burner and bring it up here and there, I guess.Zeke actually sounds a little dorky to me, but it's okay enough. I was just thinking that maybe he would like the names because they have a Z in them.We actually have a number of girls' names that we can kind of agree on. He seems less interested on if the girls stand out for "weird" names than the boys, which I guess is pretty common in society.

What about Zech? Although it may get mostly confused for Zach. I knew a Zech once. I don't think Zeke is too big of a stretch, though.I have always disliked Zachary, but Zachariah isn't so bad and Zechariah is a bit better yet. I think Zachariah is a perpetually youthful sounding name, but not in a douchey way like Zachary. It feels a bit athletic, I guess, while Zechariah is more warm and cerebral. I would assume a Zachariah/Zechariah had pretty normal conservative, Christian parents--normal for where I live, anyway. I wouldn't bat an eye. It fits right in with all the Noahs, Levis, etc.I think both names clash a lot style-wise with Cordelia. If Biblical boys' names are mostly what you can agree on, I'd be going another way with girls' names. I see you like Edith and Margaret... something more classic like that would fit just a little better.

The "eck" part bothers me a bit. It reminds me of "blech," as Bear said. Good to know others think Zeke could work.See, I think Zachariah/Zechariah sound more Jewish. M. is actually Muslim, and I'm agnostic, raised Christian. I like some Biblical names, but I tend mostly toward more British names, usually older, slightly fusty and/or pretentious ones. Haha. He likes all of two names pretty much, so trying to determine style is...well, he likes Adam because it doesn't stand out and it can be found in his religion but doesn't scream "other," whereas he like Azrael because it sounds cool. Sometimes, he says he wants something to be found in all three religions so it could belong to anyone, while other times he says, what about the Arabic name X? All this to say, I'm confused, but I don't think "Biblical" is necessarily where it's at for us. LOL. I feel like they clash a lot too. :( Cordelia is my favorite, and he actually agreed on the full combo I like for it when we first started dating, so I'm not giving that up! :P

Interesting, the only young Zachariah I know is from a Muslim family. I don't think it would be "weird" to not belog to the sort of person I described, that would just be my first assumption.

Zachariah definitely has a cool factor. I'm not fond of Zechariah. While it may be more authentic than Zachariah, it makes me think of the word / sound / grunt "blech." So. Zachariah gmv. Zeke could work well as a nn for Zechariah. Very clever. How about Cary as a nickname for Zachariah? Or is that too "feminine" too? I can see either Zachariah or Zechariah as a brother to Cordelia. Those are parents I'd like to hang out with. I try not to think about what kind of personality X or Y would have. A name is a window into the parents' souls, not the child's. Other names you both might like:Zebulon -- Zeb
Zephaniah -- Zef
Zacarias -- Cary, ("za-cah-REE-us"), such flair
Zaccheus -- although the only nickname I can think of is Zack :0(
Nehemiah
Bartimeus -- Bart, Tim
Bartholomew -- Bart, Tolly
Melchior -- Mel, magical name
Menassah -- Manny
Ishmael -- Izzy
Joachim -- Joe, Kim
Bartolomea -- "bahr-to-lo-MAY-uh" nn Mae
Mehetabel -- a cool, witchy vibe
Casimira / Kazimira -- Mira
Zosima -- Zosi, Zoë, Mimi, "ZO-see-muh" (see: Zosimus)
Hepzibah
Raphaela
Jacobina / Jacomina -- Jackie, Coco, Mina, MinnieHappy hunting! :0)

I used to definitely like Zechariah more, but now, I can't decide. It's the Zech/blech thing versus my disliking of Zach.I'm glad people think Zeke could work though. M. doesn't like unisex names, so Cary is out. Truthfully, that particular name isn't quite my thing either. I would love for someone else to use it, just not me. Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't think it is but I hate creative spelling so I'd go with zachariah

Zechariah isn't a creative spelling. In fact, Zachariah is the variant, I believe.
Thanks for your input.
