I had a friend who named her now nine-year-old son Cole. I always said that Cole, coupled with her last name, sounded like the hero of a cheesy romance novel.
That's case specific, though. Cole with another last name won't necessarily sound cheesy, but I don't know...it's just not a favorite of mine. Sounds just like the word "coal". Not the greatest mental picture.
I'd prefer it as a nickname for Nicholas, but I think it can stand alone.

I used to really dislike it. It seems very immature and unintelligent to me. But I suppose now I'd upgrade it to "having a thin area of tolerable." I have a Southern friend with four children who all have well-off Southern-y names, and her older son's first name is Cole. It fits with everyone else, which gives it that one little niche I think I can find it ok in. But otherwise, totes not my thing.
Sorry, but I think it's awful. I think of coal. A big, black lump.
LOVE it!!
Nicholas is very classic, decent and practical and Cole as a nickname works well but I prefer to use Cole as a stand alone name. It is without a doubt one of my top names and if I ever had a son, the name Cole would definitely be a high potential. I have nothing but respect for the name.

Disregard the last Cole jotted down. Guess the symbol didn't show up
Cole is one of those names where I'm not really sure if I like it or not. I'm lukewarm on it, but I definitely prefer it on its own.
I love it either way but personally prefer as a whole name.
It's okay, especially for a middle name. As a nickname for Nicholas it seems a bit too, I don't know, Clever. It's fine by itself.
