Cypress Night sounds like an old voodoo tale out of the bayous in Louisiana or something.
Cypress just isn't a name to me.
There is a book by some author with a long African name, Ntozaki or something like that, that features three sisters named Cypress, Indigo and Sassafras. That's the only sibset I can think of that includes Cypress.

The author you're thinking of is Ntozake Shange (so you were pretty close). She's most famous for the play "for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf," but "Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo" is one of her novels.
