I think Enoch is adorable and a true rarity. It's also my great-great-great-grandfather's name. What are your opinions on having a child named Enoch; are you equally enchanted? Would it be better suited to a cat (I have considered this name for a future feline)? What would be your optimal combo using Enoch in the first name position?

It just screeches 'right-wing Brit politician' to me, I'm afraid. He was John Enoch but cannily went by his unusual mn.
But ancestors trump dead politicians, so I think in your case it'd be fun to use, and actually too good to throw away on a cat. (My DH loved Katie, would not listen to how megapopular it was, and my only way of saving future daughters was to use it for a cat. But I wouldn't be surprised if one of my children named a daughter Alice or Dinah, also after cats.)

I daresay most Americans have never heard of whatever British politician it was who went by his middle name Enoch. I never have. We Americans have had our politicians also who chose to go by their middle names rather than their overused first names: Stephen Grover Cleveland, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, John Calvin Coolidge.

Anyone who's never heard of him (Enoch Powell, btw)or, worse, heard him is fortunate. But Enoch has a vintage feel which rather matched his outlook on life!
Another Brit politico, left-wing this time, was James Harold Wilson. James comes across as rather upper-class, or did in his day, though Jim is very populist; he was always known as Harold, which has a working-class vibe that he played for all it was worth, public pipe-smoking etc. Doesn't seem to happen in South Africa, or not yet anyway.

Love Enoch! But then I do love Biblical names in general, obviously! ;) I knew a couple who struggled for some time to get pregnant and then when they were blessed with a beautiful boy they named him Victor Enoch and called him Victor E (victory) as a nn sometimes. As for combos, what about:

I hate the sound of this name. It is one of the few names where I cannot for the life of me understand how anyone could like it- it sounds so ridiculous and comically ugly.
I know two Enochs. One is the son of an idiotic religious fundamentalist pastor back home in Australia and the other is a fellow student in my program who I actually like a lot as a person. Still doesn't make me like the name one iota.

I was just thinking about this name the other day. I like it, though it does tend to have a southern hick vibe to some and a overtly Biblical vibe to others.

Religious. Makes me think of eschatology, I can't remember why. It's just vaguely fanatical sounding to me. And are you sure that's enough armor?

I like Enoch. Awhile ago I made it the default name of the male protagonist in my fan-Pokémon game concept. I remember thinking at the time that it was a strong, handsome. adorable little name and wondered why it wasn't used more. I always liked the Biblical account of Enoch, too. I just think it's a great name all around, a real rarity as you said.
All that said, I think it's difficult to combo for some reason. Maybe...

I kinda like it. It's handsome, but the sound isn't the most pleasing to my ears so I always feel a little torn about it. I did encounter a boy about 8-9 named Enoch this summer, and I was pretty happy.
I'd pair it with something tweedy like Enoch Teal, Enoch Alistair, Enoch Barnabas

Ever since queenv gave Enoch a demon reputation, I've enjoyed it. Before it was a homely country pumpkin (edit, I meant bumpkin but I think the mistake is cute) sort of name to me. Now it's chic and devious. I am therefore enchanted.
Enoch would be an amazing name for a cat! It's very feline indeed.

I love the name Enoch. I think it's got a lot of history/character/energy...and I'm not sure why this is, but it makes me think of sea captains and a lighthouse.
It's not usable for me personally because (as with most obscure biblical names), I think a lot of people would assume that Enoch and/or his parents were religiously conservative, and as much as I'd like for that to not matter to me, it really, really would.
Also, a lot of people might consider the prominent "knock" sound harsh and unattractive.
I think it'd be cool to meet a kid named Enoch, though...or a cat, if you end up preferring it for a feline.
Maybe: Enoch Amadeo, Enoch Altair, Enoch Arthur, Enoch Atlas, Enoch Oleander, Enoch Miguel, or Enoch Lennon.

For a cat.... 100% awesome.
For a human, eh, 90% maybe. I actually quite like the name, but he is such a symbolic Biblical figure to me that using the name for sound seems a waste. To those who are not religious it wouldn't seem like a big deal though - and to each his own.
For me, it's a great name but a lot to live up to. I would still consider it myself, but with reservations.

This is the only thing I've ever seen in print that has seriously creeped me out. I've been disgusted by and disturbed by other things I've seen in print, but not really creeped out the way that "Enoch" creeped me out.

I stopped taking people to task for letting associations ruin names for them when I realized how often it's happened to me.
But I do think even if it weren't for that I'd find Enoch a mighty unattractive name.

I'm warming up to Enoch. I like the look of it too, but I doubt it would work very well where I live since "en" means "one" and "och" means "and". Oneand isn't such a good name. :) I'm a bit jealous of you who could actually get away with using it!
Enoch is a bit old fashioned, so I'd try to balance it out with something more common/classic/modern. Maybe Enoch Alexander? I quite like the sound of Enoch Daniel and Enoch Zachariah as well.
