I must respectfully disagree with the lady from Italy.
Edith is uglier than homemade sin. The th ending is a huge strike against it, and its similarity to "eat it" is another. Another very well-known namesake is Edith Bunker, who I think was perfectly suited to the name.

There are a few Ediths where I live, which is odd, because so very often the "th" is not pronounced, thus, "Eed-it".
That's exactly how New Yorker Archie Bunker pronounced his wife's name.
