Fern as a boy's nickname
I was thinking about nicknames for Ferdinand...I don't like Ferdy. It sounds too much like Furby.Fern sounds like a more natural shortening of Ferdinand to me than Fred does.So, do you think Fern's too weird/ugly/dated/feminine, or do you think it could work?

Ferdinand "Fern"?! That is brill, I love it. I guess you could also do Andy / Nandy / Nando / Dinny / Dino or something. But FERN, omg. I wouldn't change that. I mean, girls get to have boyish sounding nicknames all the time (Charlie, Alex, Sam, etc.), I think it'd be cool to see a boy's nickname with a slightly feminine bend. It's not like it's an extremely girly-sounding name to begin with, though. I think it could be pulled off pretty easily.

I absolutely think it could work as a nickname for Ferdinand. Actually, I think it'd be rather handsome.

Fern for Ferdinand is a bit gutsy, but I think it works. After all, if Fern turns 4 or 5 and doesn't like it, he can just say so and change his nickname. Other options;
Finn
Findy
Feddy
Andy

No, it doesn't work. Ferdinand doesn't work all that well either, these days it's likely to only call to mind the image of a timid bull from a picture book.
Fred makes better sense as a nn for Ferdinand, or even Andy.

I know some men nick-named Fern;they are actually named Fernand. It's an accepted nick-name where I live, so, it works here!

Sounds like Vern. "Hey, Vern, it's Ernest!". I just dated myself. :PI would call Ferdinand Dan, because I'm weird that way.
