Louis / Lewis
Replies
I went through a Louis phase, oh...probably last year. I still like it a fair bit, but it was a favorite for awhile. I think it looks handsome written down. I like the "lewis" pronunciation. My issue is that I don't like Lou or Louie as nicknames. They just bring unpleasant imagery to mind for me. I sometimes put it in the middle slot, when making combos, for that reason.
I like it, but the pronunciation is going to confuse a lot of people, even in the US (everyone I know named Louis pronounces their name like Louie, and I live in Virginia).

Really? It's totally Loo-is here (WA state). People would think you misread it if you said Loo-ee.
yep
Maybe it's a southern thing? Like, baseball/softball is popular, so "Louisville slugger" is a well-known brand, coming from a company based in Louisville, KY (I know some people from Kentucky who get annoyed when Louisville is pronounced Loo-is-ville)...and/or there's possibly more French influence here? I dunno.
That's the only reason I'd prefer Lewis over Louis (because where I live it'd get tedious correcting people on a day-to-day basis).

Quite common where I live, but with the "Louie" pronounciation.
either as a stand-alone name, or a combo-Louis-Paul, Jean-Louis.

I like it and I much prefers the spelling of Louis.
The only irritation is when other folks tend to believe that Lou-ee is the only or actual pronunciation. Ugh...
Louis is pronounced both ways. Just a matter of where you live.
In my opinion: Lewis isnt bad. It just reminds me that its often used as a generic surname. Plus, I think that the spelling of Louis looks more handsome\attractive (:

I like it. It's not earth-shatteringly great, but it's a solid name. I am not crazy fond of the s-sound ending on male names, but that is not a deal-breaker. It just makes it harder to pair middle names for me.
I actually much prefer it as a first name... since the many people I know with the surname Lewis have just never meshed well with my personality.
I like the Louis spelling a lot more too, though I would tend to say Louie with that. Both pronunciations work though.
And... you have to admit that Louis is certainly handsome written out!
