The sonority and repetition(s) within the name "Barbara" convey strength, which either attracts with appeal or repels with disgust; however when spoken, as though in southern NY, the sound "Baubra" - softens and deepens into the inherent state of "exoticism", exemplified with the onomatopoeia.
Not a provable fact, but The legend of Saint Barbara is quite similar to the fairy tale, Rapunzel.
I love my name. Ladies love to call me Barbie because my personality is the exact opposite of those all-too-common connotations, so they spare no occasion to re-iterate my name when speaking.
Best of Luck for your future daughter. I have read on other name cites that folks are coming around to Barbara again, stating that it is exotic and sophisticated: we've had such bad press through the past twenty years or more!
