I overheard a conversation in the street today where one kid was calling the other (I couldn't tell whether they were a boy or girl) Ayme (eye-meh). Spelling is presumed. It's very likely they were Turkish, or from another Middle-Eastern or Muslim country.
Now I think about it, it may just as well have been a Turkish word or something like that. But anyway, what do you think of Ayme? And do you think it's a girl's or a boy's name?

Something in my backhead said "Native American, South American". I've definitely heard it before. According to some sites it's Mapuche and means "significant", but I don't speak a word of Mapuche, so I can't say if it's true or not.
The closest Turkish name I can think of is Ayse.
Aihmé means "alas!" in Italian, but I guess that's not what they said. ;)

Could it not have been Ima in an accent you didn't recognise? Or, I'm thinking, it might have been some form of Aymen. Might be an interesting one for the name facts board!

To my English speaking brain, the spelling (presumed) looks a little like a bastardized Amy and it sounds like something like that too, with a thick New Zealand accent. All of that being said, I don't think it is unattractive (It would read as feminine to me), and it could balance nicely with something a little more consonant heavy.
Do tell us if you find out what it means!
[Running over it again, it also sounds a bit like the Spanish Jaime, which reads as male to me. So now my brain is all kerfuffled. Thanks for the puzzle!]
