I like Xavier. Not my favorite but it's a good name. It never struck me as solid until I met one - he was a big sweetheart and went by the nickname X, which was both badass and endearing.
I can see what you mean by it sounding pretentious, but it's at the point where most people wouldn't have that impression. I wouldn't worry about that unless your kid is a snob. ;)
I'm inclined to pair Xavier with traditionally Latino names:
Xavier Agustin / Austin
Xavier Miguel / Michael
Xavier Jaime / James
Xavier Joaquin
Xavier Rodrigo
Xavier Richard
Xavier Cristobal
