Yes it is usable. Yes it sounds like an old man name. Yes it could take on a freshness. Yes you would be looked at funny.
My friend's nephew is Solomon and when he was born I thought it was bizarre and just kinda bad. But I don't even know the kid, and the name has grown on me. It's heavy, yes, but also gutsy and lively. I'd nickname a Solomon 'Solo' (like saul-o).
I think the fact that the Solomon I know of is Solomon Gerhard doesn't help the heavy and old-man feel. I'd liven Solomon up with something much younger.
