I think it will come into the retro-chic popularity ring in a few years. I mean, people were gasping at Edith only a couple years ago, and it's poised (online) to be the next big name in throwbacks.

This is my mom's middle name. I've considered using Mariel to honor, but probably would not use Muriel. It does strike me as pretty at times, but Mariel has all the pretty elements of it without the murkiness.

Muriel is a name I want to like but it just sounds ugly to me. The MYUR- sound reminds me of manure straight away. I could get behind Mariel though.

Muriel is a lovely name. It deserves to be used more often!

Mariel, on the other hand, could really do well.

Muriel. It's the "yuh" sound that makes it unpleasant to me. The same sound that is in "urine".

I also automatically think of mural. I wouldn't say fusty, just kind of not particularly pleasant.
