Diane
Yes, we all know that Diane is dated. It's my middle name. It's very dated, as is my first name.
But I've heard a few very positive opinions of the name from older people. My mother always went on about how much she loved it, to the point that I always wondered why she didn't make it my first name, as I never heard her go on about how much she loved my first name. When I told my mother-in-law what my middle name is, because she asked, she said, "Oooooh, pretty!" and then asked me if I had ever considered going by it (The old bat has never made a secret of the fact that she doesn't like my first name, and no, I've never considered going by Diane.)
Then I knew a couple who were young when I knew them, a generation younger than my mother and my mother-in-law, who loved Diane and considered it strongly when they had a daughter.
I always stuck it into the "dated and ordinary" category, but the love I've seen has got me to wondering if I too would see something in it if it weren't dated.
What do you think? Can you separate it from its datedness? Do you like it?
And I am asking about Diane and not Diana. It's a small change of one letter and one little sound, but to me it makes all the difference.

I really like Diane, although it does seem a bit dated. I think it would be cute on a little girl today.
It's okay as a middle name, goes well with a lot of different first names, but I don't like it for a first name. Always seemed too school-secretaryish to me.
There was one Diane that I knew of in school. She was the younger sister of a girl in my class. I guess she's about four years younger than me so that would make her about thirty now.
And yes, I do much prefer Diana. What a difference a letter and a sound make.

I really like Diane, but I'm one who's sick unto death of -a endings. Give me a Diane over a Diana any day.
It's definitely dated, but I don't have a hard time moving past that. For me, it's almost dated in a "good" way. It's starting to feel a little bit retro, and I can appreciate its sleek, strong, sophisticated Frenchness.
I think it's far more dated as a middle name than it would be as a first name. I feel the same way about Louise, Anne, and Marie.

I don't think it is dated at all. I have always liked the name. The only reason I haven't considered using it is because it is my mother's middle name (and she left a long time ago).
I agree that Diana is a bit fresher to most people... but you might already know that I prefer non-a endings, so I find Diane far more elegant and sophisticated than Diana.
Personally, Diane is one of those names that people forget about, but love when they hear it. So - I guess that fits the dated category, but when used it always seems fresh to me.

One of my middle names is Diane also and it's always been dated and ordinary to me as well. Definitely not my favorite name, and I'm not sure if it was even my parents either. I was named after an aunt that I don't like. My other middle name is rather dated in my opinion as well (Megan) but I think they sound nice together. But Diane is nothing special to me, certainly nothing to rave about.
