My opinion on this changes daily. I think that it's got a cute meaning, but a frilly sound.
It is a bit too cutesy for my tastes, but I can see it in use, especially as a nickname. My sister has love loved the name Bonita, with the nickname Bonnie. I happen to prefer that use of the name to the simpler Bonnie.
