Wendel (which looks incomplete with no second l) seems dull and dorky. Germaine, in the US was a fairly popular name for black boys born in the seventies and eighties but it's now completely out of fashion. I don't like it anyway, the germ sound is unattractive. Also the line from Smokey and the Bandit "That's not germane to the situation" is a popular catchphrase.
Wendel is forever ruined for me because of an extremely clumsy and absentminded Wendell I was acquainted with. It sounds incredibly dorky to me. So, how about Denzel / Denzil instead. Even Wenzel. Or Windell / Wyndell.
Germaine is really cool, except for the existence of the word germane, and it's slightly brought down by the word "germ" in it. But it's cool enough to use IMO. I would not mind being named it.
