Shemaiah (male)
Any reactions? I like it. Does it look like shemale, though?

If it's prn like sheh-MAY-uh, then it sounds rather girly to me. If it sounds more like she-MAI-uh then it's really cool. Shemale didn't come to mind but since you mentioned that it might be wise to change the sp to Shemiah (pronunciation allowing).
I vote Jemaiah
The "she" definitely jumps right out at me with Shemaiah. Plus Jem would be a cool nn for Jemaiah

Agreed!
It's neat! I did get a bit of a shemale vibe from it, but it's still a cool name.
Jemaiah with a French J (like zhe-mai-ah) would be nice too, and also looks more masculine (to me) - but I'm not sure how you feel about messing around with names that way.

it's a girls' name ...
I graduated with a Shamaya, and my daughter's teacher in kindergarten was named Shemiyah.

According to BehindTheName.com..
It is male, but was used for both males and females in the Old Testament.

It's not my style. It just doesn't strike me as a strong, masculine name.
My first thought upon seeing it, before I read your post, was that it looks like shemale. Shemaiah has a nice sound though, but it's not really my style.
