Cecil / Cecilia
Over the weekend, we went to my fiancé's family reunion and on the way back we talked about some of the names that have been used in his family and how most of them are pretty boring and all of them have been used way too many times, but eventually I told him that the only name I'd use that I'd found on that side of the family is Cecil. It's been used a surprising number of times in his family, but not recently and not as a first name.
(Btw: Great grandfather: Benedict Daniel Cecil. )And then I mentioned that the feminine is Cecilia and he's into that too (but I think I like Cecelia more? don't know).
Anyway, what do you think of Cecil? Cecilia? We've agreed on Helena for a first daughter so, Helena and Cecil? Helena and Cecilia?
(We also both like Ari for the first boy but I feel like I know what the reaction is going to be).Combo ideas?

I'm not a Cecil fan, but I love Cecilia. It was my number one name last year (got booted out by Fiona this year.) Cecilia is classy, elegant, and vintage. I greatly prefer Cecilia to Cecelia- it looks more "correct" to me. Funny, but I used to think the opposite. As far as Helena and Cecilia go, I'm not too fond of them as sisters because they're too similar for me (both three syllables and both end in the same sound.) But I like them individually.

I do not like Cecil. It sounds like an old man's name. I do, however, like Cecilia. I think Cecil and Helena go very well together. Ari is also a very cute name; I love it. Ari Cecil sounds good.

I have a Cecilia named in honour of grandfathers Cecil. I love it and get so many compliments on her name. I like Cecil too though and would have considered it had I had my son before my daughter. I really like Helena (also a family name from my husband's side but he has vetoed it..). Ari is not a favourite of mine, but it's nice. As far as chooising between Cecilia and Cecil, I would probably just wait and see what you have first, since you already have your first child's name picked out either way, as well as the second depending upon the sex. All the names sound super cute together, imo. Helena and Cecilia, Helena and Cecil, Ari and Cecilia, Ari and Cecil...yup, all adorable :)For the record, I prefer (and chose) the spelling Cecilia, since it was to honour Cecil. I also have a name with variants and wanted to choose the most common "original" spelling for her. She still gets Cecelia sometimes, not too often so no big deal. We do call her Celia fairly regularly, fwiw.

Cecelia is the kind of spelling error that sets my teeth on edge. Celia is nice, in its place, which is not as part of Cecilia.I believe that see-sil is the preferred American pronunciation. OK. Does it affect the way you pronounce Cecilia or Cecily? I'm only used to the ses- version for all of them.My father was probably the last of the Cecils. I'd use Cecily for a daughter and maybe Cecil as a mn, given enough sons.

Cecelia and Cecily are pronounced with a SIS when I say them, so no, the American prn of Cecil doesn't change them.I actually used to pronounce it SES-il before I started listening to Welcome to Night Vale, but now I have to try really hard to say it that way.

Agree with Chloe - excellent sibsets! It would be great to see a little Cecil, and I think I like the American pronunciation more than the UK one. Benedict Daniel Cecil is handsome, too.

Ohhh man, Helena and Cecil is way too adorable, I'm keeling over. Helena and Cecilia is pretty and all, but Helena and Cecil?! It's spectacular.I guess Helena and Cecilia is the safer choice, they are classically beautiful and don't make as much of a statement.
