Bellatrix
wdyt of the name Bellatrix? I realize that she is a somewhat evil character in Harry Potter but I always loved her. But i love this as a name as well. Not really sure why, but I do. Can you imagine a little girl called Bella and someone's like is your name short for Isabella and she says actually, its Bellatrix. I dont know, I just think it's kind of cool. Probably would never use it though.

I don't like Bellatrix because of the Harry Potter reference. She's pretty much the worst character, except Voldemort. Also, because Bellatrix was practically unheard of before HP, it is a VERY strong connotation.
Bella is boring. Yes, it's not short for Isabella, but in day to day life she'd still be one of 50 Bella's in the school.

I think the only reason anybody even thinks about Bellatrix at all is because of the Harry Potter character. The name is pretty much exclusively associated with that to the point where it would seem silly for another author to name a character Bellatrix.
The Bella whose real name is Bellatrix sounds cartoonish, like a gag on TV.

I do like this name, actually. I'd probably use it as a middle name.
I really like this - I'd never use it (partly because our former queen was Beatrix, and this sounds so much like it - I wouldn't want my daughter to be associated with her, really. Not that she was a bad queen, but it would overshadow my daughter's personality, perhaps), but it's wonderful. I've always loved the character, she's such an interesting woman. Twisted and cruel, but still feminine, and I think her name reflects that. I'd love to hear a little girl say "I'm Bella - short for Bellatrix", but that little girl won't be my daughter.
I definitely prefer Bella as a nickname purely because it'd be surprising to hear her full name. Trix is nice, but I don't like Trixie. I actually knew a girl called Trix once. I don't know if that was her full name or not.

Haha, how coincidental. I just (and by just I mean less than 5 minutes ago) beat the Pokémon Kalos Elite 4 with a team that included my Sneasel named Bellatrix. Odd.
Well, anyway, I have next to no knowledge about Harry Potter, so that association is moot for me. I only think of it as a star name, so I put it in the same group as other astronomical names like Vega, Lyra, Adara, etc. I find Bellatrix to be very pretty, and I agree that meeting a Bella whose formal name is actually Bellatrix would be quite refreshing (although I personally prefer the nickname Trixie). Bellatrix is feminine and strong, beautiful yet dangerous. I think it's definitely usable, except that it's apparently associated with a not-so-nice character, from what I glean from the other comments. I don't think I'd worry about that, though. Aren't the HP books/movies over now? I doubt it'll still be a big thing by the time your little one is old enough to care.

I agree that it's kinda cool, but the character in HP wasn't somewhat evil, she was the worst of the Death Eaters. She would have married Voldy if she had the opportunity. She only cares about power. She even killed her cousin and didn't feel any remorse. Way too associate with Harry Potter now to be used.
A "somewhat evil" character?! She's full blooded evil! I'm not a fan of the character because the b!tch killed Sirius and Fred (sob) but I like how Helena Bonham Carter portrayed her (excellent casting for that role) and I do like the name. Bella is a bit over used and I find a certain charm in the nn Trix or Trixie although one could argue that Trixie has major stripper vibes. I'd totally use it if DH liked it, alas he does not.
ETA a shameless plea for PNL votes: I've recently added it to my PNL (Girls tab) and it has no votes yet so if ya'll would be so kind as to follow the link below and rate my list that'd be fantastic. :)
