River

Sounds very handmade-sandals to me. Doesn't happen where I live, so I can't be sure, but perhaps as public awareness of global climate change increases, there might be a place for it. I can't gneder it at all, but I don't mind Riva for a girl, so that should make River a boy name I suppose. And might perhaps affect River's chances for feminisation.
Mars, eh? Cool planet. Unpleasant god. Close to Mark, Marcus, Marcellus ... I'd be surprised if there was a space left over for Mars.
Oh, and my cousin married a girl with the ln Venus!

Boy, if only for River Phoenix. He made the name male for me.
I'm not sure how much of a fad it is, so I can't say whether it will become more popular. I can see more people using it for girls, though. Names that end in -er seem to appeal to people when it comes to girls' names.
I don't like Mars. Forget the fact that it's a planet, it's just not an attractive sound, IMO.

I like it as a boy's name, but I would never seriously use it. Also I don't care for Mars at all.
I like it. I think boy first (a la River Phoenix), but it would be nice on a girl too. Upbeat and quirky and whatnot. For a boy I think it feels really quiet and calm. I wouldn't say it's a fad name. I've only ever heard of one--a friend's son, who's 5 or so. I think if you are going for an uncommon but not weird nature name, River is great.
Mars I do not like. Too martial, of course, and too candy bar.

I think River is okay. I don't mind it on someone else's kid. I definitely see it as a masculine name though.
It could be a fad. I didn't hear people really using it until the last 10 years. That being said, I don't think its a trend that will make it dated.

I like it, but only on a boy and it's a GP of mine. It does sort of make me think of a kid born in the mid to late '90s. If I heard about a newborn baby boy named River, I might think it sounds slightly dated. I don't think it's going to take off for girls, for the same reason it never really took off for boys. It's too obviously a word name. I think a lot of people think it's weird for that reason.
I don't like Mars because it makes me think of the planet Mars and then I think of crazy people.

I think River is a minor Hollywood-type fad that has been hovering around on the fringes for a while and may get a little bit more popular but not much before it fades out.
I don't like it, the sound is unattractive and the name is so ambisexual as to be colorless, not like a name at all. It's just a nature word that a few people think makes a good name.
Mars I don't like either. Mars is where crazy people are supposed to be from.
