Merel
If you met a little girl (or woman) named Merel, how would you pronounce it? And what would your impression of the name be? Thanks!

Thanks for your pronunciations and opinions. Most of the pronunciations were close to what I had in mind (MARE-uhl, similar to Meryl) so I think it could work in the US.
I heard first the name when I was studying abroad in Zambia - there was a Dutch family that had the sweetest little girl, and her name was Merel. It's just stuck with me since then :-)

One of my best friends is called Merel (We're Dutch). I pronounce it MAY-rul (MÉ-rul is probably more accurate).

Call me derivative, but I'd pronounce it like Meryl, which I prefer. Merel is nice, though.
This is a quitre common Dutch name, and I find it very hard to type out the pronunciation. Closest would be MAE-rehl, I guess. It means blackbird.
I would pronounce it like Meryl. I find it a quite harsh, it just doesn't roll off the tongue nicely.
I'd pronounce it like Meryl. I think Meryl has a really pretty sound, but actually like the look of Merel better!
I would say it like... mur-EL. I like it! It would make me curious about the person. It's an artsy, mysterious sort of name.
I would pronounce it as Mare-l, like Meryl. It's elegant, simple, and pleasant.
