Hazel and Iris
I've been loving these names lately (partially because I just read Watership Down). What do you think? Are they too dated or still good for today? We're all in the gutter, but some of us look at the stars.

I like both of them. They both do still have a somewhat dated feel, but I think of it as more retro myself. Dated to me are names that are either recently stale (80s-90s) or names that won't likely come back (Ethel, Gertrude, etc.) Retro names, to me, fall in the 30s-70s period and are typically "grandma" names, but still have an element of style or an appeal. Basically, I think they're usable. I've met a teenaged Hazel and a 10-year-old Iris as well as a toddler Iris, so people are using them (sparingly.) Personally, I like the nature connection of them.

I like both names; love Iris. I recognize that they may be thought of as gr grandmother names, but I easily see them as lovely on a young girl or young woman so, no, they don't feel "too dated" to me.

I like Hazel and don't really care for Iris, but I don't think that either one is too dated. In fact, I think Hazel is on its way to becoming pretty popular. If they'd been popular in the 1940s and 1950s, then they'd be too dated, but by that time Hazel had fallen from favor and I don't think Iris was any too popular then, either. I think either one is fine to use today. It's funny, they are both botanical, but they have a different feel. Hazel is 1920s flapper and Iris is cold and sophisticated.

Iris has been steadily on the rise here for a while now (#122 in 2012) and will probably hit the top 100 this year. I love it and would use it. Not so wild about Hazel, but it's not a bad name, and I can easily see it on a young person.

I love them both!

I like Iris enough to use; Hazel not so much. Haze as a possible nn is a turnoff, and I see an Old Witch before I see a male rabbit! (Good book, though.)

I really like both names, but personally prefer Hazel to Iris. I don't find them dated at all and think they would be great for little sisters.

These names are not dated. I think that more people should use them because they are names that I can picture on people of all ages. In my opinion these names are classic and timeless.

They're so dated they're back in style. :-) Even if they weren't back in style I'd still love them. Hazel Marjorie and Iris Lydia?

I have a coworker/ sub at the school whose granddaughter is Iris. The names are so dated they're the old lady names that are coming back. I prefer Iris.
