I think Gertrude is ugly in English. It'd be pleasant and bright if it were ghehr-TROO-duh, but GURTrood is just really ugly sounding. It sounds like rude and intrude and protrude and crude, and ... Gurr. It's so ugly, it makes me think that it's one of those hipster names that only seems cool because it IS ugly. Trudy is dated like Judy is dated - but with a quality similar to Lisa or Trixie, sort of flimsy. It's alright in real life as a person's name, but has no appeal to me personally.Gertrude Brigitta
Gertrude Maja
(with German pronunciations)Esther is dry and cold and blistery sounding to me. And the Bible reference is kinda heavy, IMO. NMSEsther Judith

I love Gertrude and plan to use it for a daughter one day. It's so pretty. Esther is not really a name I would ever use but it's cute. It would be a cute sibset though.

I don't know if it is just my opinion, but Gertrude when I say it, it sounds very butchy (manly) like a man and I wouldn't want to set my child up for failure. Girls should have pretty names. Esther is very beautiful and elegant. I knew an Esther but I believe she spelled her name just slightly different, she was from Romania.

Why would it set a child up for failure?I disagree that girls should have pretty names. Narrow-minded.

Esther is cute, kind of spunky in an old-fashioned, country-girl kind of way. Gertrude is ugly and cranky.

I like Esther. I know it's an old lady name but the only one I know is my age, so I see it as younger.Gertrude, on the other hand, is frumpy old lady all the way! I find it very unattractive, maybe due to that hard G sound.

I love both names! Gertrude in particular deserves more appreciation.

I love Gertrude. It's one of my all-time favourite names ever. I like old-fashioned names - the more old-fashioned, the better.
Esther is very pretty, in a quiet, moody way.If I had to name a baby either, I would go with Esther, only because I wouldn't want to saddle a child with a name that most people she'll meet won't necessarily like.
