I'm not sure what I think of it anymore. I first heard it when I was in high school and a coworker had a son named Axel (not sure how she spelled it). At that point I thought it was just the English word, like the car part, and so it seemed tacky to me. I couldn't shake off the English word even after learning it's a legit Scandanavian name.
But I think the character from The Middle has made it seem more usable to me. It feels almost hipster-y. Pretty sure they spell it Axl in that tv show, which is my favorite spelling (since it's not the same as the car part!).
I'm actually surprised no one has mentioned the association with that show yet! Does nobody watch it?! It's hilarious! But anyway. :)
